Training: It’s Mandatory—But it Doesn’t Have to be Mundane!

Senior Care organizations know that they must train their employees in order to develop a better workforce, meet federal and state regulations, and keep everyone informed and ready to serve residents. In many facilities around the country, the phrases “mandatory training” or “mandatory in-service” are dreaded by employees as well as managers. Mandatory training can be expensive and time-consuming, and many employees may feel like it is a waste of time. But mandatory doesn’t have to mean mundane. By developing the right training program, managers can make training and in-service well worth employees’ time and effort. The employees may even enjoy themselves, too.

The Right Training Program

Developing the right training program for employees involves many factors beyond relaying the information and rules that need to be communicated. The key to an excellent program is personalization—make the information relevant and personal to the staff. Make sure they’re invested in the subject matter and how their training affects their ability to care for residents. A personalized training program results in:

  • Motivated employees
  • Improved staff retention
  • Staff that are more capable and better at their jobs
  • Improved quality of care and service for residents
  • Improved business outcomes for the organization

With these great results, a more personal and relevant training program makes good business sense. Some keys to developing a better training program include:

  • Identifying training needs: Blend training requirements (regulation updates, new rules, etc.) with the management and education staff’s point of view. Find out what employees want to learn and feel they need to know.
  • Give training context: Tie in federal, state, and corporate initiatives to convey the “big picture” view of how their training is contributing to an overall goal and an organization’s corporate identity.
  • Be creative: Use blended learning in training sessions with a mixture of classroom introduction/discussion with Silverchair’s eLearning system. Employees will get a more in-depth experience with the subject matter while Silverchair’s courses and technology keep training from getting boring.
  • Keep it simple: Employees will only retain a certain number of key important messages in training. Keep courses simple and clear.
  • It’s all in the language: Employees want information delivered in a way that is easy to understand. Silverchair writes all courses for a 6th-8th grade reading level and allows users to easily switch between English and Spanish versions of our courses.
